From Personal Journey to Professional Mission:
Arrow Pathways Brings Hope to Families Navigating Child Development
The Arrow Pathways Story
When my son Leo was evaluated for autism in the early 2000s, the process was lengthy and stressful, and autism was not widely understood at the time. The doctor delivered the news coldly, focusing solely on what was “wrong.” This experience left me scared and uncertain about the future. Fortunately, I now know that while autism can be a challenging journey, it is also the start of a beautiful and empowering path.
As part of his challenges associated with autism, Leo often struggled to find the right words. He would use the word “arrow” to indicate direction, and this simple word became a powerful symbol for our journey. Inspired by Leo’s word, "Arrow," our name reflects our commitment to providing clear direction for families navigating the complexities of autism evaluation and diagnosis.
Today, Leo is 19 and living his best life—full of joy, friends, and even a job he loves. Reflecting on our journey, I believe the way a diagnosis is delivered can profoundly impact a family’s path. Arrow Pathways was founded to offer families a more positive experience, a brighter path, and a more optimistic direction.
With Love and Hope, Erica
Dr. Sam’s Story…
When I was 12, my parents sent me to therapy to help with stress at home. I went reluctantly, feeling like it was more of a punishment than a safe space. When I finally opened up about my family, the therapist shared it with my parents, which made me feel betrayed. I left feeling unheard and misunderstood, and for a long time, I was angry about my therapy experience. As I grew older, I knew I wanted to be a trusted adult for kids who needed someone outside their families to listen. This led me to pursue a career as a licensed clinical psychologist. Now, I work with children, teens, and families, helping them navigate life and mental health challenges.
During my training, I worked part-time as an ABA therapist with autistic children in their homes. Being invited into their lives felt like a deep responsibility, as I saw not only the children's struggles and victories but also the stress and hope their parents carried. This humbling experience shifted my career focus to include autism.
Now, as a psychologist, I am dedicated to supporting autistic individuals and their families with the empathy, understanding, and trust that I once desperately needed. I’m here to offer thoughtful evaluations and support to families starting their journey with autism. Every day, I strive to be the kind of therapist I wish I had—a safe, caring presence for those who need it most.
Dr. Ali’s Story…
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and a mom when I grew up. I love babies, toddlers, children, and adolescents. I was voted “future mom” in kindergarten. I love solving difficult puzzles, and I love helping others understand how to do it too. And teaching runs in the family! My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and yet I felt an unavoidable draw towards medicine.
Like a good daughter, I tried really hard not to be a doctor. My mom saw how tirelessly my father worked for his patients and his family, and she was concerned that I, too, would put myself last. My dad is the most compassionate, hardworking, selfless, and intelligent doctor I know (and the best dad!). There are countless stories of people stopping us at the bank, at restaurants, even the attendance ladies at school, all wanting to share how my dad had impacted their lives. As a child visiting his office and a pre-med student joining him in the delivery room, it was impossible not to be in awe of his natural rapport with patients.
Pediatrics was an obvious residency choice for me and I never looked back. My developmental and behavioral pediatrics (DBP) rotation was not until the end of my second year of residency. I found kindred spirits in the DBP physicians and I fell in love with the children and families in their care.
I cherish the experience of connecting with a child and discovering how their mind works. With that critical information I can partner with families and caregivers to problem solve and brainstorm creative, child-specific, strength-based strategies to optimize success. I may be an expert on autism, ADHD, or Down syndrome, but you are the expert on your child. Developmental pediatrics is about partnership, teamwork and shared decision making. It is when we work together that we ensure your child grows into the best version of themselves.
DBP is a perfect fit for me. Now I am both a doctor and a teacher (and I’ve been known to do math homework with patients!). I get to uncover and realize the masterpiece that is each child as an individual, and it is actually my job to develop and maintain relationships! Families come to DBP seeking diagnostic clarity and guidance, often having felt stigmatized or misunderstood. I have the privilege of assuring a safe space where every child belongs and every family feels heard and accepted. I am proud to be my father’s daughter and to follow in his footsteps providing the comprehensive and compassionate care that every child deserves.
